Interest
in the Southeast Asian region, which has been considerable
ever since the European colonial period, has so for been mainly
expressed from the perspective of The West design. The direction
and objectives of our Southeast Asian Studies have themselves
altered in such a way that the studies seek to understand
SES from the Southeast Asian standing point, and at the same
time, seek to build up an alternative body of knowledge of
the region which is in lime with the rapid and drastic changes
which are talking place in the world at present. With profound
understanding of each member country in the region, it, will,
in turn, help make the region more peaceful and more harmonious.
The International Master Degree Program in Southeast Asian
Studies is as a result an interesting alternative choice for
people who aim to seek a new approach and answer in establishing
a well rounded and sound body of knowledge of the region.
Last but not least, the Faculty of Arts and the Institute
of Asian Studies of Chulalongkorn University are perfectly
placed to offer an International Master Degree Program in
Southeast Asian Studies for a number of reasons. These reasons
include the rich resources of academic and research staff
who are experts on the region, a strong regional and international
academic and research cooperative network based on this area
of studies, and rich experience in international studies programs
and research administration (including the eleven-year-old
Thai
Studies Program of the Faculty of Arts and the considerable
experience of the Institute of Asian Studies in cooperative
research programs, bringing in various sources of outside
funding taking part in research and joint research projects).
The curriculum of the program is designed in such a way that
students can develop their own areas of interest while at
the same time they can be assured of a strong methodological
base with a holistic background knowledge of the region. This
aim will be achieved by combining a range of electives and
individual study courses with both compulsory courses and
the compulsory “traveling classroom”. The “traveling classroom”
will allow students to travel to different parts of the region
to learn at first-hand from local experts and to gain hands-on
experience of the locality that they visit. The MA program
has two main objectives. These are to help develop professional
academics in the field of Southeast Asian Studies, and to
give people a profound understanding of Southeast Asia and
the issues which concern it.
